Still standing at the crossroads
Can we just be honest for a second? Because I feel like a lot of us are walking around in a place where you really don't know what God wants you to do. Carrying this quiet, heavy thing, this feeling of just not knowing. Not knowing which direction to go, which door to walk through, or even what we're feeling is God, fear, or just us.
Here's where it gets complicated. We're not all in the same place when we arrive at that crossroads. This is for the person who is really in that place, when you really don't know what God wants you to do.
Some of us are doing everything. You're praying, fasting, journaling, and asking trusted people. Still standing at the same crossroads with no clear sign pointing left or right. You're not ignoring God. You're trying, and it still feels like silence. Then some are reading this and thinking. "I'm not doing any of that." You haven't prayed consistently in weeks. You've been distant, distracted, or just too tired to try. The not knowing feels heavier because somewhere in the back of your mind, you're wondering if the silence is your fault.
Here's what I want to say to both of you: God is not withholding Himself as a punishment, and He is not a formula you can unlock by doing the right steps. The one doing everything and still confused? That's not a sign you're failing. The one who hasn't done anything lately and feels lost? That feeling does not mean you are too far gone. Both of you are in a real place. God sees both of you.
The Honest Truth
Honestly? I'm writing this from that exact place right now. This blog, Just Life Period, is something I keep stopping and starting. I'll have this fire, this clarity, this feeling of yes, this is it, this is what I'm supposed to be doing. And then somewhere between one post and the next, the fire goes quiet. And I start asking the question that I think a lot of us ask about the things we feel called to: Is this actually what God wants me to do?
That question alone has made me put this down more times than I can count. Because what do you do when you can't tell if the silence is God saying "not yet" or "not this"? What do you do when the passion comes in waves, burning one week and completely gone the next? Is that a sign? Is it just life? Could it be fear dressed up as discernment? I don't have a clean answer. But I kept and keep coming back. And I think that means something.
The Pressure We Put On Ourselves When We Don't Know What God Wants Us toDo
There's this thing we do as believers where we assume that if we were really close to God, we'd always know what He wants. Like clarity is some kind of reward for doing your quiet time right. But that's just not how it works, and honestly, that's not even what the Bible shows us. David asked God, "Shall I go?" more times than we count. Paul had plans that got shut down and redirected constantly. Even Jesus, in the garden, was in such deep anguish about what was ahead that He sweated drops of blood. Not knowing or not wanting what you know is not a sign that you're disconnected from God. Sometimes it means you're right in the middle of something He's doing.
Notice what this verse doesn't say. It doesn't say, "figure it out and then trust Him." It says trust first. Acknowledge Him in the middle of the not-knowing. The path gets made straight as you walk, not always before you take the first step.
What "Being in the Will of God" Actually Looks Like
I think we sometimes picture God's will as a laser-precise GPS route: one specific person, one specific job, one specific city, one specific person. And our entire life depends on us picking the exact right thing. But a lot of the time, God's will is more like a field than a tightrope. There's space to move, and He's with you in that space. His will for you includes things like: staying close to Him. Walking in integrity. Loving people well. Keeping a heart that's surrendered. Those aren't vague; they're the foundation. And when those this are in place, sometimes God gives us the freedom to choose, trusting that we know His heart enough to make a good decision.;
What to Do When You're Stuck in the Middle
So practically, what do you do when you've prayed, and waited, and still nothing? Here's what I keep coming back to:
Stay close, even when it's quiet. Silence from God isn't the same as absence. Sometimes the waiting season is less about getting an answer and more about building the kind of trust that doesn't need one right way.
Check your heart, not just your options. Sometimes the confusion isn't really about the decision, it's about something God is working on inside of us. Ask Him, "Is there something you're trying to show me before I move forward?"
Look for peace, not just signs. God's guidance often shows up as a settled peace that doesn't make total logical sense. Not hype. Not excitement. Just a quiet,"this is okay." If you're forcing it and it feels tight, that matters.
Keep doing the last thing He told you. If you're waiting for the next instruction but you haven't fully walked out the last one, start there. Obedience in the small things often opens clarity for the bigger things.
It's Okay to Still Be in the Middle
I just want to say this plainly, not knowing is not the same as not trusting. You can surrender deeply to God and still walk through a season where things are unclear. That's not a contradiction. That's just real.
Your questions do not annoy God. He's not withholding because you're doing something wrong. He's not absent just because it's quiet. He knows where you are, and He knows what you need, and He is working, even right now, in the middle of uncertainty to bring it together.
You don't have to have it figured out. You just have to keep your hand in His. Wherever you are in the waiting, I see you. And more importantly, He does too. Keep going.
