What Marriage Taught Me in 9 Years

Posted on October 16, 2024October 15, 2024 by JustLifePeriod

As my husband and I celebrate our ninth anniversary this month, I can confidently say that this journey has been nothing short of a testament to God's work in our lives. Marriage, for us, has been a journey of sanctification- a process where God has continually cleansed us, molded us, and created in us new and right spirits. We are so much closer now than when we first got married, and I know it's because of God's hand guiding us through every season.

It's Not About Me - It's About Serving

One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that marriage is not about me. When I entered this covenant, it wasn't to get my needs met or to seek my comfort. It's about serving and loving my husband with all my heart, as an expression of my love for God. In a culture that often focuses on compromise, I've come to understand that marriage isn't just about meeting halfway. It's about serving one another wholeheartedly and even striving to outdo each other in love and kindness.

Marriage Reflects God's Love

Marriage, at its core, is about glorifying God. It's a reflection of how God can take two different, broken people and make them one- whole and united in His purpose. Through marriage, I've experienced firsthand how God uses this relationship to teach, refine, and strengthen. It's not always easy, but it's in those moments of difficulty that God does His most transformative work in us.

Love Through Flaws and All

Another lesson I've learned is that I am loved and flawed. Despite my imperfections, I don't need to hide. When doubt creeps in and insecurities surface, I've learned I can run to the one who loves me- my husband and God. This love has taught me that there's no shame in being vulnerable; rather, there is strength in embracing who I am and allowing love to cover and heal those areas of weakness.

The Power of Communication

Communication has also become a key lesson in our marriage. I've realized that without it, how can my husband ever know my heart? We can't expect our spouse to read our minds or guess what we're feeling. Honest, open communication is what brought us closer, allowing us to grow not just emotionally but spiritually as well. I'm learning that it's okay to express how I feel, and more importantly, to listen and understand where he's coming from too.

Growing Spiritually Together

One of my favorite parts of our marriage is how we've grown spiritually together. At the beginning of our relationship, we didn't talk about God as much as we do now. We've made it a priority to talk about God, share what we've learned in our walk with Him, and encourage each other in faith. These conversations have deepened our bond, reminding me that marriage is not just about surviving the day-to-day but about thriving in God's purpose for us as a couple.

Thankful For What God Has Put Together

We're not perfect, but together we are stronger, and I'm thankful for how God continues to mold us through the highs and lows of marriage. Ultimately, marriage is a powerful way to show the world what God's love looks like. It's a daily opportunity to live out Christ's love and grace with someone you are committed to for life. And for that, I am deeply thankful. Here's to 9 years of learning to love, growing, and glorifying God together.

To my Husband! Every time I hear this, I can't help but think of you. It always brings tears to my eyes because it perfectly captures how I feel about you.
