Have you ever noticed that the hardest part of any task is simply starting? I’ve spent countless moments observing myself, trying to understand why that first step feels like the weight of the world. I’ve discovered that I’m just a girl who doesn’t like routine. I thrive on flexibility, going with the flow, and acting based on my feelings. But that mindset has its flaws- it’s a gateway to procrastination and laziness. And I know what you’re thinking: “Girl, you’ve got to do better.” I get it. The thing is, I am doing better. I’m not who I was last year, and growth is happening, even if it’s slow.
But why is taking that first step so difficult? Why does it feel like I’m fighting against myself to begin anything, whether it’s a new habit, a project, or even a daily task? The answer is rooted in fear and comfort. The first step challenges me to face my weaknesses and confront the idea that I might not meet my expectations. It means pushing past the comfort zone where nothing demands too much of me.
And sometimes, when I’m doing what I need to do- managing tasks, writing, or staying disciplined- I hit moments where frustration creeps in like an unwelcome guest. In those moments, all I want to do is escape. You know what I mean, right? I grab my phone, start doom-strolling, and suddenly hours have vanished. It’s easy, it’s mindless, and there’s no stress or confrontation of my abilities. It’s just me, sitting comfortably, avoiding what feels overwhelming.
Why do I choose that path when I know it leads to more stress in the end? Because it’s safe. It’s a space where I don’t have to face my inadequacies, risk failure, or deal with the discomfort of growth. But the truth is, staying in that place does more harm than good. It’s like pressing a pause button on my life, but life doesn’t wait. Tasks pile up, dreams stagnate, and that small moment of comfort turns into a cycle of guilt and frustration.
So, what’s the solution? How do we push past that initial resistance and keep going when frustration tempts us to check out mentally? I’m learning that it’s about making small promises to myself. Committing to start, even when it feels impossible. Being okay with imperfect progress. Reminding myself that growth isn’t a grand gesture; it’s about consistently choosing to start over, even after I’ve slipped back into old habits.
When I take that first step, even when it’s hard, I build resilience. And resilience is what helps me push through the moments when all I want is to get lost in the easy comfort of my phone screen. It’s what reminds me that the discomfort of doing hard things is temporary, but the reward of overcoming them lasts.
To anyone who’s reading this and feels the weight of taking that first step or staying on the path, know that I’m right there with you. It’s tough, and some days are harder than others. But take that step. Show up for yourself, even in small ways. One day, we’ll look back and see that every small “yes” we gave was worth it.
Be Blessed!!
